San Pedro Shooting Leaves Barber Injured, Police Probe Ongoing

An apparent shooting in San Pedro Town has left one man injured. Police responded to reports of shots fired near the Maya Island Air airstrip at 6:45 this morning. Upon arrival, officers found 25-year-old Jose Velasquez, a barber from the DFC area, suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Velasquez was immediately taken to the San Pedro Polyclinic where he was listed in stable condition. According to initial police investigation, Velasquez and his girlfriend were purchasing food at a local deli when a man on a bicycle approached him. Velasquez recognized the man who allegedly pulled out a firearm, prompting Velasquez to flee on foot. The assailant then reportedly got on Velasquez’s golf cart and pursued him, firing shots. Velasquez sought cover by jumping a fence, and the shooter fled the scene.  Police recovered several expended cases at the scene.
