Sargassum Cleanup Continues Along Belize City Waterfront

Sargassum cleanup efforts continued today along the Newtown Barracks area in Belize City, where a sargassum harvester boat was deployed to remove the seaweed buildup along the shoreline. The initiative was contracted through the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and focused on clearing the waterfront area, which has been impacted by the seasonal influx of sargassum which has become a recurring challenge for coastal communities throughout Belize, creating environmental and economic concerns. While seaweed provides an important habitat for marine life when it remains offshore, large accumulations along the coastline can lead to unpleasant odors, affect water quality, and interfere with coastal activities. Efforts such as these continue to highlight the importance of collaboration between conservation organizations, local authorities, and other stakeholders in managing the impacts of sargassum. Chief Engineer at the Belize City Council, Floyd Williams, explained the importance of the initiative and how partnerships are helping address the issue affecting the city’s coastline.
