Grammy Award-winning dancehall star Sean Paul has teamed up with veteran entertainer Brushy One String for a new single, Burn Dem Down, released on June 17 through Dutty Rock Productions.
The collaboration was born out of a chance encounter while Sean Paul was vacationing in Jamaica.
“The Brushy One String song come about because I saw him performing while on vacation in Jamaica. He played his one string and captivated the audience for over 80 minutes,” Sean Paul recalled. “He is an establishment on the hotel circuit and an artiste who I know from the 90s. This is a man with talent.”
Brushy One String, born Andrew Chin, has spent more than two decades performing professionally. He first gained widespread attention in Jamaica through Digicel Rising Stars in 2006 and later built an international following with his distinctive one-string guitar style. His signature track, Chicken in The Corn, has amassed more than 70 million views online.
Inspired by Brushy’s performance, Sean Paul began experimenting with a one-string riff on his own guitar.
“Mi start to mess with the one string on my guitar, and I play the bass line alone and come up with the riff. What came from the experiment is bluesy and full of melody,” he said.
Longtime collaborator Andre “Suku” Gray helped complete the arrangement, recording the riff in segments before it was incorporated into the production.
“After that, we built a rhythm and started writing the song. I said I couldn’t do this song without that brother [Brushy One String] here. He inspired it,” said the We Be Burnin’ hitmaker.
Brushy One String said the collaboration showcases the unique qualities of both artists.
“It cannot be denied that I have a unique voice, and so does Sean. Musically, this works because of all the experiences we have gained travelling the world and spreading Jamaica’s music far and wide. The collaboration brings out both our styles and international influences,” he said.
Sean Paul said the project was also motivated by a desire to highlight Brushy’s talent.
“He’s an artist that mi rate. It’s people like this in Jamaica that need to get highlighted. We just are not seeing his talent if he’s not in the runnings of this dancehall thing. So, I want to give him some more exposure,” he said. “People know the man, so let’s have him out there, and I hope when people hear this, then check out more of him works. Him bad!”
Brushy One String continues to perform extensively across Europe, North America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia, with additional releases planned later this year.
A live performance video for Burn Dem Down, filmed at Skyline Levels in Kingston, was scheduled for release on Wednesday. Directed and edited by Dub School and produced by Terrence “Farenizzi” Harold, the video features Sean Paul’s Badda Bandz, with cinematography by Bishop Starcore and drone footage by Robin Chin.
Burn Dem Down is now available on all major streaming platforms.
