Grammy Award winning deejay Sean Paul is off to a powerful start in 2026, earning his third UK certification in just over a week. On January 9, 2026, his breakout hit Gimme the Light was officially awarded BRIT Certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), recognizing 400,000 units in combined sales and streaming equivalents in the United Kingdom, as measured by the Official Charts Company.

Just last week, Sean Paul’s 2003 hit “Like Glue” reached Platinum status in the UK(600,000), while his collaborative track “Go Down Deh” with Spice and Shaggy earned Silver certification(200,000).

Originally released in Jamaica in 2001 under the title “Give Me the Light” on the Buzz Riddim, the song was produced by Troyton Rami and Roger Mackenzie of Black Shadow Records. It later received an international push in 2002 as the lead single from Sean Paul’s second studio album, Dutty Rock—the project that would ultimately launch him into global superstardom.

“Gimme the Light” became Sean Paul’s first major international hit, peaking at No. 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reaching the Top 5 on the UK Singles Chart.

Beyond the charts, the song has enjoyed lasting cultural relevance. It was named one of Billboard’s “12 Best Dancehall & Reggaeton Choruses of the 21st Century” in 2017, and in 2024 it found new life when rapper Ice Spice sampled it on her single “Gimmie a Light.” The track’s official remix featuring Busta Rhymes further cemented its place in hip-hop and Caribbean music history.

The Gold certification in 2026 highlights how streaming has introduced the song to new generations, allowing a classic dancehall record to thrive more than two decades after its release.
