In a historic show of unity and recognition, women from Belize’s security forces took center stage this morning during the country’s first-ever All-Woman March, held in observance of Women’s Month. Female officers from the Belize Police Department marched in formation alongside their counterparts from the Belize Defence Force and the Belize Coast Guard, marking the first time the three agencies have come together in an all-woman formation. The milestone event highlighted the growing leadership, professionalism and presence of women within Belize’s security services, while encouraging young women across the country to consider careers in law enforcement and national defense. Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith described the march as both progress and long-overdue recognition for the many women who continue to serve with distinction in demanding and often male-dominated environments. While he was not in attendance, the Prime Minister did meet the media today in western Belize and underscored the importance of women not only within Belize, but across the world, noting that societies thrive when women are empowered, supported and given equal opportunities to lead.
The march culminated at Government House, where participants were addressed by several speakers. Special guest Dame Froyla Tzalam also addressed the gathering, commending the women for their service, discipline and commitment to national development. In her remarks, Dame Froyla spoke candidly about the challenges many women continue to face, particularly in the area of domestic abuse, describing it as a painful and complex issue that often requires immense courage to confront. She emphasized the need for continued advocacy, support systems and national dialogue to protect and uplift women across Belize.
Also addressing the ceremony was the Commander of the Belize Defence Force, Brigadier General Anthony Velasquez who highlighted the invaluable contributions of women in law enforcement and the military. He noted that women bring critical perspectives, leadership qualities and operational strengths to national security efforts, while steadily breaking barriers that once limited their participation. He added that today’s march stands as a powerful symbol of progress and inclusion within Belize’s uniformed services.
Commanders from the Police Department and the Coast Guard also offered brief remarks, reaffirming their agencies’ commitment to gender equity and professional advancement.
Today’s march is being hailed as a defining moment for Belize’s security forces, signaling not only celebration, but a continued commitment to expanding opportunities for women who serve and protect the nation.
