Senator Fitz-Henley: Holness Admin Has Outperformed Last PNP Gov’t in Housing

Government Senator Abka Fitz-Henley says while there is room for improvement, he’s rejecting opposition criticism that the Holness-administration has under-performed in the area of housing when compared to the previous People’s National Party, PNP, government.

He was responding to criticism from opposition senator, Professor Floyd Morris, that the current administration is failing badly to provide affordable shelter to poor Jamaicans.

Chevon Campbell reports.

Senator Fitz-Henley says the current term of the Holness-led government has resulted in the building of just under 2,000 more houses than the PNP delivered in their last term.

Fitz-Henley highlighted data from the National Housing Trust which revealed that between 2012 and 2015 just over 12,000 houses were completed by the trust.

He says between 2020 and last year, the Holness-administration surpassed that figure by a notable margin.

Senator Fitz-Henley acknowledged that much more needs to be done to fulfil the housing needs of Jamaicans.

Fitz-Henley, who was contributing to the State of the Nation Debate in Parliament recently, also blasted opposition senator, Floyd Morris, for criticising the New Social Housing Programme.

Mr. Morris suggested that the PNP’s operation PRIDE programme which was mired in scandal had delivered more credible results.
