Senator Glenfield Dennison Faces Scrutiny Over Salary, Allowances and Firearm

Senator Glenfield Dennison faced public scrutiny this week after details of his government salary and allowances were disclosed. The information became public after Dennison claimed that Prime Minister John Briceño could not relate to poor and working-class Belizeans because he does not personally pay for fuel. Dennison reportedly receives close to ten thousand dollars monthly as a Crown Counsel, including housing, utility, vehicle, library and robe allowances. This is separate from the approximately one thousand, three hundred and sixty-five dollars he receives monthly as a senator. Dennison laughed when questioned about the disclosure, saying his income was public information and that the attention was a personal attack intended to distract from his political message.  The Union Senator was also at the centre of controversy this week after reportedly refusing to hand over his licensed firearm at the National Assembly. The weapon was reportedly seen at his waist during Tuesday’s Senate meeting. Dennison argued that he should be allowed to keep it because of his position and concerns for his safety. Police assistance was requested after he initially refused to comply. Following a meeting with Senate President Carolyn Trench-Sandiford, Dennison eventually handed over the firearm for safekeeping.
