WESTERN BUREAU:

Charm, elegance, and cultural pride were on full display in Westmoreland last weekend as seven contestants were officially sashed by their sponsors, marking the start of their journey to become the 2025 Miss Westmoreland Festival Queen. The event, organised by the Westmoreland office of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), was held at the poolside of CocoLa Palm Hotel in Negril.

The event brought together community leaders, cultural enthusiasts, and supporters, all eager to witness the unveiling of the contestants, who range in ages from 19 to 29, taking their first step towards the June 8 grand finale, which will take place at the Sean Lavery Faith Hall, in Savanna-la-Mar.

All seven contestants showcased poise and cultural awareness, drawing strong interest.

Carlene Rumbolt, chair of the Westmoreland Festival Queen Committee, said the women were recognised for their stage presence, boldness, and commitment to cultural advocacy, which are key values of the JCDC Festival Queen competition held under the theme ‘The Jamaican Woman: Proud & Bold’.

“These young ladies have much going for them, and I am proud of what they represent. I would like to ask all families and community members to support them as much as possible throughout this journey,” said Rumbolt, adding, “One of the most beautiful things I have observed is the bond of sisterhood that has developed among them.”

She went on, “They are not afraid to offer each other constructive feedback, that some might call ‘positive criticism,’ which is a testament to their maturity and support for one another.”

The contestants will undergo a series of developmental workshops, community projects, and public appearances, all leading up to the grand parish coronation show. The winner of the contest will advance to the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Competition as Westmoreland’s representative.

Marjorie Leyden-Kirton, director of community development services at the JCDC, expressed pleasure at the cultural importance the event has taken on.

“We take pride in this competition. Not only for the pageantry, but for what it represents: a platform for young Jamaican women to shine, to showcase their talents, and to contribute meaningfully to the development of our culture and our country. We’ve seen many outstanding winners from this parish who have gone on to bring not just pride to Westmoreland, but recognition to Jamaica. They’ve become household names, and we are proud of each one,” said Leyden-Kirton.

The sashing of this year’s contestants from all parishes is complete. St Thomas will kick off the parish coronation season this Saturday at 8 p.m. at Colonel Cove in Morant Bay, where the parish winner will advance to the national competition.
