Jamaica’s Rovman Powell has been removed as captain of the West Indies T20 team and replaced by Barbadian Shai Hope who is already West Indies ODI captain.
The change is just one in a whirlwind of adjustments at the top of regional cricket in recent days.
Hope was appointed T20 captain on the advice from Darren Sammy who is coach of West Indies in all formats of the men’s game.
Hope’s first games in charge of the T20 squad will come in June when they West Indies takes on England and Ireland in a total of six T20 games.
Powell had been in charge of the T20 team from 2023 and had victories against India, South Africa and England all at home.
Meanwhile Barbadian Kraigge Brathwaite has stepped down as captain of the West Indies Test team.
Brathwaite led the Test team from 2017 to 2025 spanning 39 Test matches in which he oversaw ten victories and 23 defeat.
Under his leadership the West Indies beat Australia in a Test match in Australia for over two decades in 2024 before picking up a series draw in Pakistan at the start of the year.
A replacement for Brathwaite will be named in April as the team prepares to meet Australia in three match home series starting in June.
