Fans of regional cricket are still digesting news that there’s leadership in two of the of the teams.
Jamaica’s Rovman Powell has been stripped of the T20 captaincy and Kraigge Brathwaite has stepped down as captain of the Test team.
Shai Hope who is already the ODI captain, takes over from Powell while Brathwaite’s replacement is expected to be named in a few weeks.
Hope was appointed T20 captain on the advice from Darren Sammy who is coach of West Indies in all formats of the men’s game.
Hope’s first games in charge of the T20 squad will come in June when they West Indies takes on England and Ireland in a total of six T20 games.
Powell had been in charge of the T20 team from 2023 and had victories against India, South Africa and England all at home.
Meanwhile president of Cricket West Indies, Dr. Kishore Shallow, says Brathwaite’s decision to step down as captain of the test team did not come as a surprise to the board.
Dr. Shallow says Brathwaite informed him of his intentions earlier in the year.
Brathwaite replaced Jason Holder as captain during the pandemic and on his watch the West Indies won or drew nine of 16 series.
They beat England at home in 2022, and won in Australia for the first time in 27 years in Brisbane in 2024.
In his last game as captain, in January, West Indies ended a 34-year drought in Pakistan.
Brathwaite has played 98 tests.
