Twenty-year-old Shamar Delroy Smith was shot and killed last night while socializing with others on Pelican Street in Belize City. Police say two men approached on a dirt bike motorcycle, and one opened fire on the group, fatally injuring Smith. Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero says the victim appears in the Police archives as he has been charged for at least one incident of gun violence. ACP Romero also note that Police are working at preventing retaliation.
Smith, a resident of Antelope Street, was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Investigators recovered eight expended nine-millimetre shell casings from the scene and reviewed surveillance footage as part of their investigation. Our newsroom understands that Police are treating the killing as gang-related. Their initial report states that people approached in the area declined to cooperate with investigators.
