Shaw continues goal scoring run as City edge Liverpool to stay unbeaten

MANCHESTER, England – Khadija “Bunny” Shaw found the back of the nets for the third straight match but Manchester City needed two late goals to get past Liverpool 4-2 in a thrilling encounter in the Women’s Super League here on Friday.

Shaw struck for City on the stroke of half time – her fourth goal in three matches – to level the scores, before a Liverpool own goal and a second strike by Lauren Hemp ensured they would remain unbeaten and stay at the top of the table.

Playing at home, City took charge early on when Hemp ran on to Carlotta Wamser’s pass inside from the left and finished past former City keeper Khiara Keating after just 13 minutes.

However, Alice Bergstrom and Vivien Endemann took advantage of defensive lapses in City’s backline, with Bergstrom netting in the 19th minute and German striker Endemann pouncing on a loose ball 10 minutes later after City failed to clear a cross from the right side.

Shaw was unlucky to hit the post from a tight angle, but the Jamaican international drew City level in first-half injury time after being the quickest to react when Hemp’s low strike from the left trickled onto the goal line.

The contest seemed headed for a draw until Liverpool’s defender Grace Fisk converted a Grace Clinton cross past her own keeper in the 90th minute to put City ahead 3-2.

Hemp then put the icing on the cake after racing clear in the fifth minute of added time to calmly finish for her second goal. CMC
