MANCHESTER, England (CMC):
THERE WAS a mixed bag for Reggae Girlz in their bid to raise silverware for their English teams after this weekend’s FA Cup quarterfinals.
While Khadija Shaw sent Manchester City through to the semifinals with her strike propelling them to a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at the Joie Stadium, Crystal Palace captain, Allyson Swaby, had to watch as her side went down 0-1 to Chelsea. Lauren James got the goal at Kingsmeadow in the 64th minute.
Chelsea’s win could mean some silverware for on-loan-from-Tottenham Reggae Girl goalkeeper, Rebecca Spencer.
At Joie Stadium, Shaw broke the deadlock after a goalless first half, before Jess Park doubled the lead to set up a mouthwatering clash with defending champs Manchester United.
City, who dominated possession for most of the contest, finally got their breakthrough in the 53rd minute when Mary Fowler’s precise through ball picked out Shaw, who rolled the ball over the line.
With Villa’s defence tiring, City took full advantage with Vivianne Miedema teeing up Park to make it 2-0 in the 72nd minute to seal the contest.
The result means City and United will meet in the final four on April 13, while Chelsea and Liverpool will contest the other semifinal.
