Shepherd grabs three wickets as RCB begin title defense in winning fashion

BENGALARU – West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd snared three crucial wickets to help defending champions Royal Challengers Bengalaru (RCB) began their Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign in winning fashion with a six-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday.

Playing at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the opening match of the tournament, Shepherd and Jacob Duffy both took three wickets as Hyderabad posted a competitive total of 201 for nine in their 20 overs after being sent in to bat.

Skipper Ishan Kishan top scored with 80 off 38 balls, laced with eight fours and five sixes, while Aniket Verma made 43 and Heinrich Klaasen chipped in with 31.

Player-of-the-Match Duffy took 3-22, while Shepherd claimed 3-54.

Virat Kohli then scored an unbeaten 69 off 38 balls with five fours and five sixes and Devdutt Padikkal slammed 61 off 26 balls, inclusive of seven fours and four sixes, to see RCB get up to 203 for four in just 15.4 overs.

Captain Rajat Patidar bludgeoned 31 off only 12 balls and Tim David finished on 16 not out, to ensure the defending champs eased home with 26 balls remaining.
