Shyne Urges Belizean Creatives to Persevere During Appearance at Film Awards

Belize’s former Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow has highlighted the importance of passion and perseverance in the creative arts following his appearance at the African American Film Critics Awards (AAFCA) in the United States.  In a statement issued today, Barrow said he had the opportunity to present the award for Best Documentary to the Hoops, Hopes and Dreams team and to meet Oscar-nominated director and writer Ryan Coogler, known for major productions including Black Panther and Creed. Barrow described Coogler as humble despite his success and noted that the filmmaker spoke about the teacher who encouraged him to pursue screenwriting, a moment Barrow says reflects the importance of mentorship and belief from others.  According to Barrow, achievements such as Oscars and Grammys are secondary to dedication to one’s craft and the desire to contribute positively to society through art. He also used the experience to encourage Belizean creatives, acknowledging the challenges artists face locally and internationally while urging them to remain committed to their work.  Barrow further congratulated award recipients, including Vanguard Award honoree Jason Aidoo, saying the event served as inspiration and a reminder of the value of perseverance in creative pursuits.
