Ljay Wade, Cayo Correspondent: “Improving lives through statistics, strengthening and innovating together.” that is the theme for this year’s Caribbean Statistics Day which was celebrated and recognized as part of today’s festivities across the Caribbean. The Statistical Institute of Belize held a statistics day exhibition at the University of Belize’s gymnasium in the capital city. Javier Romero, the communications officer at the Statistical Institute of Belize explained the role that the SIB plays in the country and the importance of having statistics readily available and easily accessible.

Javier Romero, Communications Officer, Statistical Institute of Belize: “It’s important because what statistics allows us to do is it allows us to make better and more informed decisions. So through the use of statistics we can be more innovative. We can do things in a more efficient. Information is power and the information that is being displayed here today is not only beneficial to policy makers or decision makers but it also impacts everyone in their daily lives. From people that do business, they can be more efficient in the way they approach their business. For students and academics, whenever they are conducting research they can know where it is that they can find the necessary information and for the general public well information is important as it makes them able to do better and more well-rounded decisions.”
Ljay Wade, Cayo Correspondent: Statistics Day exhibition featured interactive booths from government ministers, statutory bodies, and partner organizations that make up the national statistical system. Visitors of today’s exhibition had the chance to engage with statistical experts, learn about ongoing research initiatives and see firsthand how statistics influences key sectors such as education, health, climate resilience, and economic development.

“Well, know statistics is very important. The world moves in statistics. It’s very important for all decisions that are taken, especially by government. So we provide all these statistics to the government, we generate statistics for them. We collaborate with SIB all through the year. We provide statistics to them, we get statistics from them. It’s a very close relationship with SIB. We participate in their events also. We participate in trainings that they provide. So we have a very close relationship with the SIB.”

Denis Maldonado, Sustainable Development Officer: “We work really closely with Statistical Institute of Belize. We have an MOU with them. We collaborate all the time. We’ve been collecting data, like I said, for a voluntary national review so we can highlight where we are within achieving the SDGs and all of that data is actually found on the portal that SIB has. So that portal, the Sustainable Development Goals portal, is important for us to showcase what’s being done on their portal, on their website, have the young people know that it exists. They can do research, our work colleagues or other line ministries they can also access that portal. And so with SIB, we have worked to have that information accessible to the people since they are the nation’s uh national entity on data, official data, we channel our information to them, through them.”
Ljay Wade, Cayo Correspondent: At the end of this week, the Statistical Institute of Belize will be having their annual data user conference, bringing together policymakers, researchers, academics, private sector leaders, and international development partners for a day of data-driven dialogue and collaboration.
