Pleasantville Secondary and Signal Hill Secondary Schools, joint holders of the Secondary Schools Girls’ Football League National ‘Big Five’ title after their final was not played last season, both kicked off their respective Girls Championship Divisions with commanding wins.
In the four-team competition held last Thursday, two-time SSFL Girls’ “Player of the Year” Nikita Gosine, her sister Natalia Gosine, and Daniella Ramlogan each scored two goals for reigning Coca-Cola Girls National Inter-Col champions Pleasantville Secondary, leading to their 8-0 victory over St. Joseph Convent (San Fernando) at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium Training Field in Marabella.
The pair of Kaeley Martin and Alexis-Raye Lalchan were also on target for Pleasantville Secondary, who will go after a second win from as many matches today when they face Fyzabad Secondary at Delhi Recreation Ground from 3:30 p.m.
Fyzabad Secondary also won their opener in a resounding style, a 6-1 span of Moruga Secondary inspired by Leia-Marie Balfour in their 7-0 blanking of Goodwood Secondary, with Anna Baird and Keona Knott chipping a hat-trick from Jordyn Bailey, while Timera Ottley added two goals, and Naiya Bally, the other, got a lone reply from Teja Bacchus.
Signal Hill slams
Goodwood Sec 7-0
Over in the Tobago Zone, Signal Hill Secondary got a hat-trick from Tyler Neptune and a double by Leia-Marie Balfour in their 7-0 blanking of Goodwood Secondary with Anna Baird, and Keona Knott chipped in with one each.
However, the biggest winners in the zone were Scarborough Secondary, who mauled Mason Hall Secondary 13-0 behind a seven-goal display from Adrianna Fowler.
Scarborough Secondary’s La Shawna Adams and Kyla Cooper both scored two goals, while their teammates, Zuri Lyons and Blessing Taitt, were also on target in the one-sided contest.
In the other match, Bishop’s High School got a goal from Kerecia Hurst in their 1-1 draw with Speyside High School, who had J’Naya Gray on target.
Five Rivers, St Augustine, slam rivals
In the East Zone, Five Rivers Secondary and St. Augustine Secondary sounded early warnings to their rivals with dominant wins against San Juan South Secondary and Barataria North Secondary, respectively.
At Five Rivers, the host triumphed 19-0 over San Juan South behind five-goal performances from Ameeda Bowman and Hakeema Goodridge.
Jada Herbert added a beaver trick in the lopsided outing with Cathalaya Revello adding a double, and the trio of Amaya Nero, Bryanna Vesper, and Khalifa Alllen, one each.
St. Augustine Secondary also got five goals from Serenity Thomas (13th, 17th, 18th, 44th, and 48th) and a beaver trick via Jasl Solozano (sixth, 11th, 22nd, and 37th) in their 13-0 defeat of Barataria North Secondary.
There was also a hat-trick for Ria Roberts (second, 39th, 69th pen) and one goal by Angel George (67th) for the ‘Green Machine’ girls, while in the other zonal encounter, Bishop’s Anstey High School East beat San Juan North Secondary 3-1 with goals from Kyra Yee Loy, Meagan Cromwell, and Rebekah Campo to cancel out Sapphire Goddard’s reply.
St Joseph’s Convent (PoS) blanks East Mucurapo 10-0
Former national girls’ inter-col champions, St. Joseph’s Convent (PoS), blanked East Mucurapo Secondary 10-0 with Sydney Pollard scoring a hat-trick at St. Joseph’s Convent Ground, Serpentine Road, St. Clair, in their North Zone opener.
London Millen fired in a pair of goals for the winners, with the quartet of Isla Tom, Scarlett Cole, Kara Cooper, and Janique Alexander adding one each along with an own goal in the victory.
Also on Sunday, Tranquillity Secondary got a goal each from Denia Bridgelal and Shekirah McFarlane to beat Holy Name Convent (PoS) 2-0.
The International School of Port-of-Spain got strikes from Khloe Kirton (18th), an own goal via Ariel Pollard (36th), and Mia-Media Singh in the 57th to overcome Diego Martin Central Secondary 3-0.
