Trinidad and Tobago swimmer Dylan Carter delivered an impressive performance in the men’s 50-metre butterfly final at the Pro Swim Series in Sacramento on Saturday night, narrowly missing out on victory.
Representing Azura Florida Aquatics, Carter touched the wall in 23.13 seconds to finish in second position, just one-hundredth of a second behind the eventual winner, Santo Condorelli of the United States, who captured gold in 23.12 seconds. Dutchman Sean Niewold was the fastest among the qualifiers at 22.94 seconds, while American Michael Andrew booked his place in the final with a time of 23.37 seconds to qualify second. Condorelli, coincidentally, had qualified fourth in 23.61 seconds.
In the final, however, Condorelli benefited from a 0.58-second reaction time at the start and managed to hold on until the end. He was closely pursued by the lanky Trinidadian, whose reaction time of 0.62 kept the two neck-and-neck throughout the title swim. Niewold settled for the bronze medal in 23.21 seconds, with Andrew, representing MA Swim Academy, finishing fourth in 23.26 seconds.
The quartet of Aiden Hayes, Finlay Knox, Cole Faut, and Ryan Nordheim completed the top eight, clocking 23.78, 23.84, 24.35, and 24.61 seconds, respectively.
Earlier in the day, Carter qualified comfortably for the final after posting one of the fastest times in the preliminaries, continuing his strong form throughout the international meet. The three-time Olympian was among the standout Caribbean performers at the competition as he continues to sharpen his sprint skills ahead of major international championships later this year.
Earlier in the competition, Carter produced strong performances to reach the finals of the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke events, though he fell short of the podium in those respective races.
