Simpson: No change in Greenwood situation

Reggae Boyz team manager Roy Simpson said there has been no change to the Mason Greenwood situation, despite some weekend reports claiming that the Marseille striker has been approved by FIFA to make the switch from England to Jamaica.

According to Dailysports, a highly regarded football news website, Greenwood is set to return to international football wearing Reggae Boyz’s colours.

The report stated that FIFA has approved the 23-year-old forward’s one-time nationality switch from England to Jamaica.

Greenwood qualifies to represent Jamaica through his father. However, Simpson told The Gleaner that there has been no change in his situation, and that FIFA still requires a piece of document from his parents for him to acquire his passport.

“Nothing has changed. It’s still being worked on,” Simpson said, while noting that the family has asked of them to refrain from speaking on developments publicly until things are finalised. “The family has asked us not to speak on it. But nothing has changed,” he insisted.

Greenwood earned his only England cap in September 2020 under then coach Gareth Southgate during a UEFA Nations League fixture.

In 2022 he was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour. But despite those charges being dropped in 2023, he has been overlooked by the Three Lions, since and has not featured again, with no sign of a recall.

He formally submitted his request to switch allegiance, after English FA declared the player is no longer eligible to play for England; and since Greenwood appeared on the Reggae Boyz’s radar, Jamaica fans have eagerly anticipated his arrival.

UNDENIABLE TALENT

The former Manchester United and Getafe player currently sit second on the Ligue 1 scorers’ chart with 18 goals and three assists and would bring top-tier European experience and undeniable talent to the Jamaica national team.

Since joining Marseille he has regained top form after his prolonged absence from football due to his legal issues stemming from the allegations of attempted rape and other charges.

The Reggae Boyz are scheduled to face Guatemala in World Cup qualifiers and in the 2025 Gold Cup, and Greenwood’s inclusion would be more than just immediate reinforcement, it would reflect Jamaica’s broader ambition to compete with regional heavyweights.

For Greenwood, a move to Jamaica would represent a personal and professional reset at the international level, with a chance to rebuild his legacy under a new flag.
