The North West Regional Health Authority has announced what it describes as a milestone in neonatal care, following the discharge of the smallest triplets ever delivered and treated in Trinidad and Tobago.
In a media release today, the Authority said the infants were delivered at 27 weeks and received care at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Port of Spain General Hospital.
The NWRHA said the successful discharge reflects the strength of the three infants and their family, after what it described as a long and fragile journey in intensive care.
It added that the outcome demonstrates advanced neonatal medicine, including respiratory and nutritional support, along with the dedication of the nursing and medical teams assigned to the unit.
The Authority also acknowledged the emotional realities within the NICU, describing it as a space of both hope and heartbreak. It said it continues to remember all families whose experiences in the unit have taken different paths, noting that those stories remain part of its ongoing commitment.
According to the release, the development represents more than a medical first, pointing instead to the Authority’s focus on delivering care grounded in excellence, compassion and honesty.
The triplets have since been discharged and are now at home, where they continue to receive paediatric follow-up care. Their names and medical details remain private at the request of their family.
The family, through the Authority, expressed gratitude to the NICU team, the NWRHA and others, and asked that their experience serve as encouragement for other families with babies in intensive care.
