Waterhouse kick-started their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) season with a solid performance to brush aside Molynes United 2-0 at the Stadium East field yesterday.
Goals in each half from Mario Simms (12th) and Colorado Murray (56th) saw the Drewsland-based team to a comfortable win.
Assistant coach Jermaine Miller said although they had some lapses after going two goals up, it was a satisfying display.
“It was a good performance. We got the early goal, and from there on it was just maintaining what we had.
“At times we made the game a little more difficult than it was. But we came out in the second half and got another early goal, and it was just game management from there.
“It’s a work in progress. It is the first game, and so we are not going to be too hard on the players,” Miller commented.
Waterhouse were better from the start and 12 minutes into the contest, Simms stole in at the back post to power home a header for the opener.
They should have added to their lead midway the half when Murray crossed to Leonardo Jibbison, who inexplicably failed to get a touch from four yards out at the back post, with the goal gaping, in the 30th minute.
Jason Wright came close for Molynes moments later, but goalkeeper Akeem Bernard parried his shot for a corner.
Waterhouse continued to put good passes together and in first-half stoppage time, Murray’s dangerous-looking shot was deflected wide by a defender.
Tyrique Wilson responded for Molynes with a similarly good effort from a free kick minutes later, but his goal-bound strike from the edge of the area was deflected wide.
Waterhouse would add a second early in second half when Murray cut in on his right, on top of the box, and hit a low strike inside the near post.
Wilson should have pulled a goal back three minutes later after good work from Rashawn Livingston down the left, but the striker placed the ball wide of the upright.
Molynes kept Waterhouse honest and had a few good half-openings, but the winners soon regained control and saw out the game comfortably.
“I thought we started a bit flat and allowed Waterhouse to capitalise in the first 25 minutes,” Molynes coach Jermaine Thomas stated.
“We came into our own at the back end of the first half, and in the second half we stepped up and got some results from the changes we made. But they scored against the run of play, and at 2-0 down, it became a bit more difficult,” the Molynes coach said.
