Social Security Board Awards 85 Scholarships to Belizean Students

The Social Security Board has awarded eighty-five new scholarships to students entering high school and sixth form as it celebrates twenty-five years of investing in education.

The awards were presented today at the Best Western Plus Belize Biltmore Plaza under the theme, “Empowering Future Generations through Education.” SSB Chief Executive Officer Jerome Palma said the programme reflects the organization’s commitment to supporting Belizean families and investing in the country’s future.  Love News anchor Thamar Jones, who received an SSB scholarship in 2003, was among the guest speakers. She encouraged the new recipients to make full use of the educational opportunity now being provided.

The programme was established in 2001 and has since assisted hundreds of Belizean students. SSB Communications Director Vanessa Vellos says the twenty-fifth anniversary represents a significant milestone for an initiative that continues to create educational opportunities for young people.

The ceremony was attended by members of the SSB Board, including Chairperson Sheree Smiling-Craig, along with former scholarship recipients and the students’ families. The scholarships were formally presented by CEO Palma and Senior Communications Director Mowava Garcia-Fuller.
