A businessman residing in the south is in the spotlight tonight after allegations surfaced against him and landed him at the police station in Dangriga. The businessman is being accused by his 22-year-old girlfriend who went to the police and made a formal complaint at around three o’clock on Sunday morning. The couple was reported at a social gathering on the Stann Creek Valley Road when the girlfriend accused the man of having an affair with one of the women at the gathering. The exchange intensified to the point where the complainant called another man to pick her up which then shifted the argument into a physical assault. We join our Belmopan Correspondent, LJay Wade for his conversation with the victim.
Ljay Wade, Belmopan Correspondent: A woman from Hope Creek in the Stann Creek district is seeking justice. The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, is claiming that she was abused by her ex-common law husband but the police department is failing to take the matter seriously. The incident in question occurred at a party over the weekend in Hope Creek Village. According to the victim she and her ex-common law husband began arguing when he began slapping her and hitting her over the head with a Buchanan whiskey bottle.
Victim: “I was socializing with my then common-law and we were socializing at a party. At the party I had suspicions that he was messing with someone at the party because he was acting very weirdly and he was being very distant and so I felt that he was, I felt like he had somebody else, you know like I had a feeling. We got into a heated argument and he was like “No I’m not doing that. You’re crazy, you don’t know what you’re talking about.” And things like that. No I’m not crazy. He was like “You want to go home right ? That’s what you want, you want to go home.” And I was like “Yes I want to go home, Take me home. Because at this point we’re yelling and stuff like that and people at this event we’re socializing and I’m like “Yeah take me home.” And he’s like “No I won’t take you home, I’m not moving from this place. If you want to go home you find your own way to go home.” And at that point I didn’t want to call anyone so I was like “No I’m not going to call anyone.” And he’s like “Let me call someone for you.” And so he picked p his phone, he dialed and he called someone and that’s when I said “Yes.” I answered the phone and I said “Can you come pick me up.” And the other person on the phone was like “I’m not at home right now, I ‘cant pick you up.” And I was like “Okay cool.” But when I ended the call and I gave him back his phone he went crazy on me. He started yelling, he was like “You’re cheating on me. I know you’ve been cheating on me.” And then he said “I will kill you tonight.” And he proceeded to slap me up. He punched me really hard in the face and at this point the same female came and intervened and when she came to intervene she was like “You guys relax, relax.” And she was yelling and that’s when he grabbed the Buchanan bottle, a whiskey that he was drinking and he walked past her and he began hitting me in the head with it. And at this point I’m crouched down on the flood and I’m trying to protect my head but he still managed to swing at me and that’s when I felt pressure and I felt something cold running down my body and then I realized it was a lot of blood.”
Ljay Wade, Belmopan Correspondent: The injuries were substantial as the woman received multiple bruises on her face and two gashes to the back of her head, both of which needed stitches. Despite filing a police report, no charges have been brought against the alleged attacker. The woman claims that his political connections and his status as a senior JP is what’s keeping police from going after him. She says that all she wants is justice.
Victim: “I was issued a medical form and I went to the station the day after and I made my report and this was Sunday and after that I had told them that I just want my stuff because many of my stuff stayed at his house. Like my passport, my bank cards and stuff like that. So I was constantly going to check up like when they would detain him because this happened on Sunday and he’s been in town from Monday. He’s been walking around town, he’s circling, he even went to the police station because he’s a senior justice of the peace and so he has to sign document but he hasn’t been held yet. So at this point I’m just really scared and I’m worried because for one I’m scared for my life because this man is still out there and he threatened to kill me right then and there. He was like “I will kill this.” And so you know like he has it out for me and he still hasn’t been arrested yet and so at this point I’m just really scared because I was bleeding and I was left on the road side. Because he has political affiliation and he has several ties to the police and I believe that he’s been doing what he’s been making calls and stuff like that and I would assume that’s why he hasn’t been picked up because if it was any other regular John would he not have been picked up already ?”
Ljay Wade, Belmopan Correspondent: Up to our news time we understand that no charges have been levied against the man. Reporting for Love News. Ljay Wade.
