Southern Tour Highlights Garifuna Heritage Ahead of Garifuna Settlement Day

It’s Day Five of Love FM’s Southern Tour, and on the eve of Garifuna Settlement Day, the team continued its cultural journey across the south with a stop at the Barranco Garifuna Museum in Barranco Village. Today’s visit placed the spotlight on Garifuna culture, music, and heritage, offering viewers and listeners a deeper look into one of Belize’s most influential cultural communities.  During the visit, a significant moment unfolded as Dr. Alberita Enriquez, co-chair of the Garifuna Language Competition, was inducted into the Battle of the Drums Hall of Fame under the Sponsors Category. The honor was presented by Darius Avila, President of the Battle of the Drums, recognizing Dr. Enriquez’s long-standing contributions to cultural preservation and youth engagement.

From Barranco, the tour continued with Richard Herbert and Gregorio Canelo, who traveled to Dangriga where activities were underway at Stann Creek Ecumenical High School. There, the team met with Naiomy Noralez, who shared insights into the traditional craft of cassava bread making, a cornerstone of Garifuna culinary heritage.

The event featured several booths, including one led by the school’s business department, where students dressed as waiters and waitresses served food and attended to guests. An information corner was also on display, showcasing biographies of prominent Belizean artists, giving visitors a chance to learn more about local talent and cultural icons.  The Southern Tour continues tomorrow with full coverage of Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations.
