The Special Electricity Committee (SEC) established by Prime Minister John Briceno is on track to meet its 90-day deadline to present to develop a National Electrical Energy Mix Master Plan. The SEC was formed on July 16 to secure Belize’s energy future by developing a comprehensive plan with short, medium, and long-term targets. That plan must seek to ensure a reliable and consistent power supply; maintain affordable electricity rates; and prioritize the use of renewable and non-greenhouse gas-emitting energy sources. Chairman of the SEC, CEO in the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, and Logistics, Dr. Leroy Almendarez, says that the six-member committee has already developed the short-term targets.
The SEC has representation from the Public Utilities Commission, Belize Electricity Limited, and the private sector./
