THE 2024 champions Corinaldi Avenue Primary School won the season opening rally of the St James Municipal Primary Netball at the Montego Bay Boys and Girls Club last Friday.
The rally was contested by eight teams. Four teams did not show up for the rally but are expected to join the competition.
Gina Haughton, president of the St James Netball Association, says she is excited about the upcoming competition.
“I am expecting a good competition based on the teams that I saw in the rally. There are four strong teams but I know in competitions teams always improve,” Haughton told The Gleaner.
“I don’t know if we are going to have an upset or the defending champions will retain their title but there are strong teams playing in the competition,” she added.
According to Haughton, 12 teams have registered for the competition.
“Maldon Primary are our newest members on board. I am anticipating a very good turnout with coaches and their players coming out to execute different game plans. There are some experienced players who do not only have the skills, they are also aware of the rules so we are looking to see who will outshine the other,” Haughton said.
Corinaldi, who have won the competition for 18 consecutive years, edged out Flankers Primary 3-2 at the final match at the rally.
Winning coach Omroy Kerr said he is confident the team will triumph again this year.
“I am sure there won’t be an upset, it will be 19 consecutive titles for us,” Kerr declared. “I am happy that the competition is getting stronger because we have won win easily too often. Flankers coming in with a strong team this year is good for the sport and I like it. Whatever happens, we will be comfortable,” Kerr added.
Meanwhile, Malik Gordon, coach of Flankers Primary, said after being out of the competition for a while, he believes his team is a strong candidate to win it all.
“I believe this year there will be an upset, we will take home the trophy,” Gordon said. “Our team is one of the favourites to win the competition and I have faith in my girls. With the team that we have, we will take this one home for Flankers as they are putting in the work. As the competition progresses, we will have more time to train and work on any weaknesses that we have,” he added.
The competition continues next Tuesday, May 13 at 10 a.m. at the Montego Bay Boys and Girls Club with Barracks Road Primary facing Maldon Primary and Chetwood Memorial opposing Mount Salem Primary.
