Stained Glass Camp Introduces Belize Youth to Creative Trade

A four-day summer camp aimed at introducing young people to the art of stained glass officially came to a close today at the Department of Youth Services in Belize City. The camp, organized in partnership with stained glass artist Jokeeta Johnson, is one of several summer programs being hosted by the department to keep young people engaged while exposing them to valuable life and career skills. Throughout the week, participants were taken through every stage of the stained glass-making process. From learning about safety procedures and designing their artwork to cutting, grinding, foiling, soldering, and assembling the finished pieces, the students gained hands-on experience in a craft that blends creativity with technical skill. For Johnson, the camp was about more than creating beautiful artwork. She says she wanted to introduce young people to a unique trade that could one day become a career or business opportunity.

The camp concluded with participants proudly showcasing the stained glass pieces they created over the four days. For many, it was their first experience working with the medium, but one they say has left a lasting impression. Participant Kayanna Graray says the camp challenged her to learn something new while building her confidence and creativity.

The Department of Youth Services continues to host a number of summer camps across the city.
