Stakeholders Review Draft Belize Sustainable Ocean Plan

Stakeholders from Belize’s fishing and tourism sectors gathered in Belize City today to review and provide feedback on proposed zoning and management measures outlined in the draft Belize Sustainable Ocean Plan, commonly referred to as the BSOP.  The national validation session, held at the Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel, forms part of Belize’s efforts to fulfill commitments under the Blue Bond Agreement, which requires the country to place at least thirty percent of its marine space under biodiversity protection measures.  Representatives from fishing associations, tourism organizations, and other marine stakeholders participated in discussions on proposed marine management areas that could contribute to achieving the thirty-percent conservation target. The session also allowed participants to examine draft zoning maps and management proposals designed to balance conservation efforts with economic activities such as fishing and tourism.  Marine Spatial Planning Process Lead at the Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute, Samir Rosado, says the consultation process is a key step toward finalizing the plan and ensuring that stakeholders have an opportunity to shape its implementation.

Among those participating in today’s session were Eworth Garbutt, President of the Belize Flats Fishery Association, and Norman Castillo, President of the Yugadan Fish Folks Association. Both representatives shared their perspectives on the proposed marine zones and the potential impact the plan could have on fishers and coastal communities.

Rosado explained that the draft marine spatial plan is currently in a public inspection phase as part of the formal adoption process. During this period, stakeholders and members of the public are invited to submit comments, recommendations, and concerns before the document is finalized.  He added that a series of community outreach sessions is scheduled to begin tomorrow, providing additional opportunities for residents and coastal stakeholders to review the proposed plan and offer feedback on the designated use zones.  The Belize Sustainable Ocean Plan is intended to guide the long-term management of Belize’s marine resources while balancing environmental protection, fisheries, tourism development, and other ocean-based activities.
