Nicole Commissiong begins each day the same way: with an attitude filled with gratitude.

It’s the casual kind that slips from the tongue in polite conversation, but the deep, all-consuming gratefulness that comes from having faced a moment when everything could have changed.

It is an outlook forged through resilience, reflection, and a life shaped by service.

Born and raised in South Trinidad, Nicole has long been known as a woman of purpose: an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and community leader whose days were once filled with the relentless rhythm of professional commitments, family responsibilities, and civic engagement. “Growing up in South was a blessing, I feel so deeply connected to the people and the community that shaped who I am today,” she says. Like many high-achieving women, she moved through life at full speed, driven by ambition and a desire to give back.

Then, in 2024, life insisted she stop. Nicole suffered a stroke.

In an instant, the momentum that had carried her forward for years was interrupted. The experience was frightening, disorienting, and deeply personal – a moment that forced her to confront the fragility of health and the cost of constantly pushing forward without pause.

For many, such a moment might have become a defining limitation. “I kept thinking of my husband, Darnell, my children, my team. I thought about what my life would look like if I didn’t take stock of what was happening and start to prioritise my health. What would that legacy of love look like?”

In the face of adversity, Nicole chose to see it differently.

Instead, she embraced the experience as a moment of clarity. With the support of her family, friends, and community, it became an unexpected turning point: a call to reassess the pace of her life and the pressures she had quietly carried for years. In the stillness of recovery, she rediscovered something that had always been present but rarely prioritised: balance.

Today, gratitude sits at the centre of everything that Nicole does, both professionally and personally.

Nicole speaks openly on her social media platforms and at high-profile conferences about the importance of self-care, wellness, and intentional living, particularly for women navigating leadership roles, demanding careers, and new chapters of life. The message of this C-Suite executive is simple but powerful. “Believing in your ability to lead and succeed should never come at the cost of your well-being,” declares Nicole.

That philosophy is rooted deeply in the values she learned growing up in Trinidad.

As a child, Nicole watched her mother move through the world with compassion and generosity. Those early lessons – about kindness, about service, about caring for others – left an indelible mark. They shaped the way Nicole understands and navigates leadership today: not as power or prestige, but as a sacred responsibility filled with intention and care.

It is why philanthropy has always been central to her life.

And now, as a stroke survivor, her purpose has grown even clearer, and her heart even bigger.

Nicole has transformed her personal experience into a platform for advocacy, using her voice to champion health awareness and encourage others to prioritise their wellness before crisis forces the conversation. She reminds women that strength does not lie in endurance alone—it lies in knowing when to slow down, when to listen to the body, and when to choose oneself.

Her journey of resilience and service has not gone unnoticed.

Recently, Nicole was honoured with the Survivors Who Thrive Award at the Open My Heart Foundation’s All Red Jazz Brunch in Washington, DC. The award recognises individuals who have overcome heart and stroke challenges while continuing to uplift and impact the lives of others. “To stand in that room was a living testament of healing boldly and thriving with intention. God really carried me through what could have taken me out.”

For Nicole, the recognition is meaningful. However, the true reward lies beyond the plethora of accolades that she has seen in her lifetime. These days, the grand prize is in the conversations she now has with women who see themselves in her story. It’s in the quiet encouragement she offers to those who feel overwhelmed by expectations. Her values stay steeped in the reminder that life is not only about achievement, but about appreciation.

Nicole Commissiong’s story reaches beyond the arteries of survival. It is the story of a Caribbean Renaissance woman who turned a moment of vulnerability into a mission of empowerment by choosing gratitude not only when life is easy, but when it is difficult, uncertain, and deeply transformative.

And in doing so, Nicole is inspiring others to live with greater intention, greater purpose, greater balance – and a deeper appreciation for the gift of simply being here.
