Sugarcane Farmers Collect Second Crop Payment Amid Dip in Revenue

Sugarcane farmers collected their second payment for the past crop season.  The monies are not as much as previous years had registered, but the farmers lined up, nonetheless, at the various banks across the countries to collect their monies.  Love News spoke with the Chairman of the Belize Sugarcane Farmers Association (BSCFA) Alfredo Ortega on the revenue for the farmers.

Alfredo Ortega, Chairman, BSCFA’S Committee of Management: “This is the second payment the farmers are getting today. The first payment is during the harvest season. The second payment is five Wednesdays after the crop finishes. And the third payment is in the first Monday of November. So from this payment that we are getting right now today, we won’t be getting any payment until the first Monday of November. It varies a lot you know and especially this year because there was a reduction of yields between 30 to 50 % for some farmers. So what they’re collecting today, the average per ton I would say between $12.50 average. But as you know we are classified in test groups and based on the quality of the different test groups that is what the individual farmers get that are in the different test groups. So the lowest test group is in the vicinity of $6.87 and the highest is in the vicinity of $14.07. So in the middle of that is where there is a variation of some of test groups getting $10 and some cents others $9 and cents, other $11 and cents. Like in the case of B13, which I am a part of it, we are getting $11.71 because we didn’t end out in the positive side of one. We were very close to it but we didn’t reach that positive side. So all the groups that were above one they are the ones that are getting above the $12 mark.”

The third payment of the farmers is slated to be disbursed in November.
