Summer Bond Camp Launches With Robotics and Sports Program

Summer Bond camp officially opened yesterday, welcoming more than 75 students between the ages of seven and eleven for a week of learning, recreation, and personal development. The annual program is taking place at Swift Hall in Belize City and is now in its fourth year.  This year, organizers introduced a new component to the camp, robotics as a sport through a partnership with the Belize Robotics Federation. On the opening day, students were introduced to LEGO SPIKE Prime building and programming, as federation members guided them through hands-on activities focused on creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving. The robotics sessions were led by Belize Robotics Federation President Jamie Lee Usher, Vice President Godfrey Sosa, and Secretary Luis Silva. Along with robotics, students are participating in basketball, football, and table tennis activities, with support from coaches and volunteers from the Belize Table Tennis Association. The organizer of the Summer Bond camp, Carolyn Gentle-Genitty noted that the camp adds to character-building through guidance from counselors, volunteers, and community partners, including the Belize Red Cross and Saint Catherine Academy alumnae.

This year’s program also includes pre- and post-camp surveys to track students’ growth in areas such as decision-making, engagement, and personal development. Students will also receive educational sessions from Belizean rocket scientist Dr. Policarpio Soberanis, founder of ANANSI Lab LLC, during the week. Summer Bond 2026 is led by Dr. Gentle-Genitty and supported by educators, volunteers, and community partners. The five-day camp will conclude on Friday with a showcase where students will present highlights from their activities and learning experiences.
