Belize City was transformed into the nation’s largest sporting arena today as hundreds of primary school athletes from across the country converged on the old capital for the opening day of the National Sports Council’s Super Nationals Primary School Championships. From the Marion Jones Sports Complex to the MCC Grounds, Swift Hall, The Hub, and the Belize City Civic Center, young athletes proudly represented their districts in a full day of competition spanning football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, and skills challenges. The event showcased the best primary school talent from Belize’s six districts, with teams competing not only for championship honors but also for district pride. At the Marion Jones Sports Complex, football competition got underway with the female division featuring a matchup between Corozal and Toledo, while the male division saw Corozal facing off against Stann Creek. Meanwhile, basketball action took center stage at Swift Hall and The Hub, where female teams from Stann Creek and Toledo squared off, while Orange Walk battled Toledo in the male category. Volleyball enthusiasts gathered at the Belize City Civic Center where Stann Creek and Corozal met in both the male and female divisions, while aspiring track and field athletes showcased their speed, agility and athletic ability at the MCC Grounds through sprint relays and other athletic challenges. The championships form part of the Government’s ongoing investment in youth development through sports. Beyond competition, the initiative is designed to encourage discipline, teamwork, healthy lifestyles and national unity while providing a pathway for talented young athletes to develop their skills at an early age. Minister of Youth, Sports and Transport Anthony Mahler says the Super Nationals continues to create opportunities for young Belizeans to compete at a higher level and demonstrate their abilities on a national stage.
Throughout the day, venues were filled with cheering supporters, coaches, teachers and parents as students displayed remarkable determination, sportsmanship and competitive spirit. National Sports Council officials say the championships continue to grow each year, creating an environment where young athletes can gain valuable experience while building friendships and connections with participants from across the country. The energy and enthusiasm were evident at every venue as sporting stars seized the opportunity to represent their districts and schools in one of the country’s premier youth sporting events.
The competition continues in the coming days as athletes look to advance through the various categories and bring home national titles for their districts./
