Chief Justice Bryan Sykes has granted an interim injunction preventing the government from bringing into force the law making Portmore a parish.
He granted the injunction in chambers Thursday afternoon.
The injunction will remain in force until the parties return to court on March 28.
The Opposition People’s National Party, PNP, has raised constitutional questions about the government’s unilateral push to make Portmore Jamaica’s 15th parish.
MP for South St. Catherine, the PNP’s Fitz Jackson, as well as Mayor of Portmore, Leon Thomas, are named as claimants in the lawsuit.
The Attorney General, Dr. Derrick McKoy and the Local Government Minister, Desmond McKenzie are the respondents.
