Sylvia Rhone to Receive Bet ‘Ultimate Icon’ Award

Legendary music executive Sylvia Rhone will be honored with the prestigious Ultimate Icon Award at the 2026 BET Awards, recognizing a groundbreaking career that has helped shape the modern music industry and inspire generations of leaders.

The awards ceremony will air live on June 28 from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

According to BET, the Ultimate Icon Award celebrates trailblazers whose achievements have transcended their profession and left a lasting impact on culture. The distinction recognizes individuals whose influence extends beyond personal success to redefine what is possible for future generations.

Rhone’s career exemplifies that legacy. Widely regarded as one of the most influential executives in music history, she became the first woman to lead a major record company when she was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Elektra Records, a division of Warner Music Group, at age 42.

Her rise to the top began with an entry-level position at Buddah Records, where she started as an assistant before steadily advancing through the industry ranks. Throughout her career, she broke barriers as both a woman and an African American executive in a field traditionally dominated by men.

During her leadership at Elektra Records, the label was home to major artists including Metallica, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, En Vogue, and Natalie Merchant. She later became CEO of Universal Motown, overseeing a roster that included Akon, India.Arie, and Erykah Badu.

Over the decades, Rhone has worked closely with some of the most celebrated artists in music, including Stevie Wonder, Lil Wayne, Tracy Chapman, Brandy, Kid Cudi, Anita Baker, and numerous other influential performers.

Rhone, who stepped down as chairman of Epic Records in 2025, remains one of the most respected figures in the entertainment industry. Her contributions have not only helped launch and sustain the careers of countless artists but have also opened doors for women and people of color in executive leadership roles.

Announcing the honor, BET’s Executive Vice President and Head of Programming, Connie Orlando, praised Rhone’s transformative impact on both the music business and popular culture.
