A talent development and management agency, WEI Sports, has unveiled plans to build a state-of-the-art- indoor track and field complex in Jamaica.

Karl Wilkins of WEI Sports says the move to build a first of its kind facility in the region is to unlock untapped potential in Jamaica’s track and field.

William Mitchell reports.

Wilkins says he is well aware that Jamaica is one of the real heavy hitters in global athletics, but he believes field there’s more opportunities on which athletes can capitalise.

Wilkins argues that temperatures hovering close to 40 degrees Celsius – or over 100 degrees Fahrenheit – still represents a danger to athletes’ health and well-being.

According to Wilkins, they’re looking at a 2027 opening date for the facility, with plans afoot to break ground in 2026.

The facility is projected to cost 12 million US dollars, half of which Wilkins has already been secured.

He says the aim is to nurture young athletes to boost Jamaica’s talent pool, using a model similar to the YMCA in America for young participants.

Meanwhile, Wilkins says the facilities which will be in central Jamaica, possibly in St Ann.

Wilkins says efforts are underway to engage the government and local track and field bodies like the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association.
