- File photoAnti-crime operations in the Mayaro early on January 8 have resulted in the arrest of seven suspects, including a teenager, and the recovery of homemade shotguns, several rounds of ammunition and camouflage clothing.
Police said officers from the Mayaro CID, supported by the Canine Unit, carried out the operation between 3 am and 7 am, in keeping with the ongoing state of emergency.
The officers recovered a total of four shotguns and 21 rounds of ammunition.
Police said a 19-year-old man of Seaview Lane, Plaisance, Mayaro, was arrested for the possession of three rounds of 5.56 ammunition as well as on an outstanding warrant for three counts of robbery with violence.
Two men, 46 and 40, from Freeport, were each held for possession of three rounds of 12-gauge cartridges.
Four were held for each having homemade shotguns and several rounds of ammunition.
They include three men, 25, 29, and 39, from Eccles Road West, Grand Lagoon, and Mayaro, and the fourth, a 30-year-old man from Uqire Road in Freeport.
Two of them were said to have had camouflage clothing.
The police added that six of them were arrested along Maloney Road, Mayaro, after surveillance based on information received.
Snr Supt Paponette co-ordinated the operations, which Sgt Mohammed and Cpl Jaikaran supervised.
