Teen Son Jailed After Brutal Beating of Mother in San Pedro

A senior citizen is recovering from surgery to the hand after being beaten by her 18-year-old son at her home just over a week ago.  Meanwhile, the son, Carlos Giovanni Gomez, is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being charged with grievous harm and deadly means of harm.  Gomez appeared in the Belize City Court before Magistrate Ludlow Black where he was placed on remand.  The charges stem from an incident on Sunday, July 13 in the San Mateo Area of San Pedro Town.  According to the report, Gomez went to his mom, 56-year-old Marleny Calderon, and asked her for money.  The woman was looking to open her house door when the son took a piece of bush stick and struck her.  Calderon fell to the ground and began screaming for help as the son continued beating her.  Nearby residents came to her aid and took her to the polyclinic and then later to the KHMH in Belize City.  Calderon has since undergone surgery on one of her hands.  San Pedro Police were able to locate Gomez at his mom’s house where he was arrested.  Gomez is to return to court on September 26.
