Two young residents are alleging police brutality following an incident that reportedly occurred over the weekend along the George Price Highway in the Teakettle Village area.
The claimants have been identified as 17-year-old Alex Herrera and 19-year-old Jonathon Abrego. The two teenagers say they were travelling on their motorbikes from Spanish Lookout to Belmopan to visit family members when the incident unfolded. According to their account, as they approached the S-curve in Teakettle Village, a heavily tinted vehicle signaled for them to stop. The teens say they hesitated, explaining that there was no clear indication that the occupants of the vehicle were police officers. They claim the vehicle then drove ahead of them and blocked their path on the highway, leading to what they describe as an assault. The young men allege that they were forcibly removed from their motorbikes and subjected to physical force during the encounter. They maintain that they posed no threat and were not attempting to evade law enforcement but were instead uncertain about the identity of those signaling them to stop.
Police have not yet issued a detailed statement addressing the specific allegations. However, authorities have consistently maintained that officers are expected to act within the law and follow established procedures during traffic stops and operations. As is standard in such cases, any formal complaint would be subject to internal review or investigation by the relevant oversight bodies.
