MOUNT PLEASANT head coach, Theodore ‘Tappa’ Whitmore, believes there were many pluses to be found in the team’s 1-1 draw against Montego Bay United at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Monday night.
Mount Pleasant remained league leaders on 62 points, while MBU, third, closed the gap on Arnett Gardens to two points after moving to 50.
“You can sum it up in many ways but I am very pleased with our team’s performance. I am pleased with how we see out the game. I think we showed character and didn’t give our opponents any look-ins or goalscoring opportunities,” Whitmore told The Gleaner.
Whitmore was speaking in the context of having to play the entire second half with a man’s disadvantage after Jahshaun Anglin received a second yellow on the stroke of half-time. Anglin was first carded in the 36th minute.
Now focusing their attention on the final 13 games of the season, Whitmore said the aim is to build on their points tally and continue their form.
“I am very pleased with how we finished the second round. We look forward to the final round and continue to get the ‘Ws’.
In a well-attended north coast derby with the two giants and with two former teammates now coaching, the highly anticipated match saw Mount Pleasant take the lead at the 31st minute courtesy of an own goal by MBU’s Odane Nish.
MBU, who had begun to make their man’s advantage tell early in the second half, predictably equalised when Johan Weatherly scored in the 48th minute.
Despite the numbers advantage, and the majority of possession, MBU had very few chances for the remainder of the game, with newly installed coach, Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis, calling it a good test.
“It was a good game and we were playing a quality team. Our players’ minds were in the game and they do not lack fitness. We just need to make a few more adjustments to get over the hump. In the second half we adjusted, played more organised and were able to score. I think we should have gotten the three points but nevertheless we played a quality team in Mount Pleasant,” Davis said.
