The Bahamas Doesn’t Have Enough Athletes to Send Team to World Relays

The Bahamas will not be sending a team to the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, from May 10-11.

Chief executive officer of The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations, Mabelene Miller, says this is due to a lack of available athletes, making it not feasible to field a competitive team.

Miller says they were able to identify four athletes for the men’s 4-by-100-metres team but was unable to find a fifth. As for the mixed relays, Miller says they just didn’t have the legs to compete.

The final entry list confirms that 734 athletes from 43 federations have been entered for the global competition in China.

This is only the second time The Bahamas will miss the World Athletics Relays. The Bahamas also missed the world relays in 2021 when the event was held in Poland.

At that time, the world was still in recovery from Covid-19, and several nations, including The Bahamas, didn’t compete. The United States, Canada, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, also didn’t take part in the global meet.

As a result, it is the only world relays in which a nation other than the United States topped the medal chart and points standings.

The first three world relays were held in The Bahamas, as well as the sixth edition in 2024 after stops in Japan, in 2019, and Poland in 2021.

The global spectacle is set to make a return to The Bahamas in 2028.
