When his players take to the field in their opening games of the Concacaf Men’s U17 Qualifiers on Monday, the young Reggae Boyz head coach, Altimont ‘Freddie’ Butler, will have no questions about their determination to create history for Jamaica.
Butler has named his 21-man squad set to take part in the upcoming qualifiers in a press release sent by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF).
Jamaica has been drawn in Group H of the qualifiers and will contest the group stage against El Salvador, the Cayman Islands and St Lucia.
The winners of the group will qualify for the FIFA U17 Men’s World Cup in Qatar set for November later this year.
Butler said his players are motivated to make their country proud and will be doing their best to qualify for the age-group World Cup.
“We’ve worked tirelessly over the past months to prepare this group of players for the challenges ahead. Competing in the Concacaf U-17 Qualifiers is a tremendous honour, and we are focused on achieving our goal of qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup,” Butler stated.
“The boys are motivated, talented, and ready to give their all for Jamaica. I have no doubt they will make the nation proud,” the head coach added.
One of the key names in Butler’s squad is New York City FC’s academy striker Seymour Reid.
Reid has been a main source of goals for the youth team as he showed his eye for goal in the recent Torneo del Sol tournament last month.
HIs tally of six goals earned him to top goalscorer award as Jamaica had used the tournament as their final preparations for the upcoming qualifiers.
Also included in the list are schoolboy talents Giovanni Taylor of Jamaica College and Orel Miller of Glenmuir High.
JFF President Michael Ricketts expressed his support for the team ahead of their departure tomorrow.
“The JFF extends its full support to the Under-17 team and management as they embark on this important journey. We are confident in their abilities and determination to represent Jamaica with distinction. The entire nation is behind them, and we wish them success in their mission to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup,” Ricketts stated.
The competition is set to kick off today with action from Groups A, B and C. Jamaica will start their campaign on Sunday with a clash against St Lucia.
Their second group match will see the young Boyz taking on the Cayman Islands on Wednesday before closing out the group against El Salvador.
All games are set to be played at the Cementos Progreso Stadium in Guatemala City.
