The unmasked leader of the future

1 hour ago 6

What appears when a leader is unmasked? Does the unveiling reveal a wholesome individual who possesses authentic competence? Or does it expose a title-dependent imposter, masquerading under a polished veneer of expertise? Both personas are present in today’s world.

I have met many leaders whose identities are so defined by their titles that they neglect the deep work required to prove their worth beyond the comfort of those titles. The uncomfortable truth is that without their titles, these leaders would be invisible, nondescript individuals who fail the competence and positive influence test. Their existence is built around peddling the illusion of power and influence. The irony is that this illusion is conspicuous. It is known, recognised and acknowledged by those in the leader’s orbit.

Title-dependent leaders, who identify with prestige over substance, merely occupy the role. Often, they are placeholders who rely on hierarchical influence and positional power to get by. The major effort needed to maintain positional power, comes at the expense of leadership impact. Some of these leaders function at the C-suite level, and instead of driving business progress, their lack of competence fuels stagnation at best and strife at worst.

Even more discomforting is the fact that these leaders become the greatest liabilities for the businesses they are supposed to lead. They become the biggest risks, instead of the strongest contributors to growth and momentum.

Title-independent leaders are a boon to any business. They exist to provide the substantive answer to the question, “Who are you without your title?” Their response would be, “I am a changemaker, who leads and grows other changemakers through inspiration instead of designation.”

This type of leader possesses qualities that transcend formal authority. They mobilise people around a vision, belief or cause. Their influence is exercised through personality power, trustworthiness and the psychological safety they create in every circumstance.

Title-independent leaders do not have to be unmasked. Neither do they live with that fear. They are the embodiment of authenticity. Often, in T&T, I hear managers and leaders make the questionable statement, “I am one way at work and another way in my personal life.”

This statement gives me pause every time. I cannot understand why an individual would want to be burdened with the double work of a split character or personality. It is far too much work. Life becomes simple when a single code dictates how one thinks, acts and behaves. It is also more calming to one’s nervous system and to that of others.

Given the inextricable link between leadership and business vitality, there is a growing urgency for businesses to build strong appetites for title-independent leadership. These leaders will be willing to undertake the journey to outgrow ego and to grow beyond the façade of self-importance.

This unmasked, authentic style of leadership will fortify businesses faced with remaining intact throughout the cut and thrust of a rapidly evolving marketplace. The unmasked leader of the future will be capable of pairing managed disruption and quiet architecture with vision and sustainable business design.

The world needs unmasked leaders who are on a mission of values transcendency. In other words, the values on display will not be for display purposes. They will be the anchors that reflect the leader’s journey to successively higher levels of authenticity.

It would be safe to say that in the next generation of title-independent leadership, there will be no space for rehearsed, performative or contrived behaviours. There will only be room for leadership capacity that creates meaningful impact through authentic contribution.
