The Weeknd is the latest international star to step forward with a major humanitarian gesture, donating $350,000 to support relief efforts in Jamaica following the devastation of Hurricane Melissa.
Through his XO Humanitarian Fund, The Weeknd’s contribution was made by way of The World Food Program.
“We are grateful to The Weeknd for his generous support for WFP’s urgent relief efforts. His compassion will provide much needed comfort and resilience to Jamaicans as they navigate this crisis,” said Barron Segar, World Food Program USA President and CEO. “When it comes to humanitarian disasters, WFP is among the world’s first responders. But our work is only possible through the generosity of our private sector donors and global partners.”
The Category 5 storm tore through the Caribbean at the end of October, impacting nearly six million people across the region. Jamaica was hit hardest, with widespread structural damage on more than half the island with entire communities left struggling to rebuild. Officials warn that full recovery will take years in some areas as assessments continue.
Amid the crisis, charitable support has been flowing into the affected regions. The World Food Programme (WFP) is currently active across Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti, coordinating emergency food assistance and logistical aid.
World Food Program USA, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., supports the United Nations World Food Programme (a 2020 Nobel Peace Prize laureate) by engaging U.S. leaders, businesses, and the public to help end global hunger.
In 2022, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye partnered with World Food Program USA to create the XO Humanitarian Fund, powered by proceeds from his After Hours Til Dawn tour. The fund has generated over $6.5 million to fight severe hunger worldwide, including $4.5 million for emergency relief in Gaza and $2 million for women and children in Ethiopia. It also provided $1 million to support firefighters and residents affected by the Los Angeles wildfires.
