One of the many pillars of Jamaican culture is family, some are more about it than others. However, male Dancehall and Reggae artistes, specifically, have been known and stereotyped to have a large amount of children, usually with more than one partner.
This was highlighted by a post, recent published on Instagram by Reggae artiste Nesbeth. This post shows a number of Dancehall icons and legends along with the number of children they have. While these figures aren’t verified by Yardhype, for the most part they are believed to be accurate.
One of these names included in the post is the man dubbed by Dancehall fans as the “Energy Gad”, Elephant man who is said to have 38 children.
It was said by the hitmaker himself that he had his first born at age of 17 years old. He also said in an Onstage interview in 2012 that he had 20 different baby mothers at that point in time.
Another name that was well anticipated on the list is Dancehall legend, Ninja Man. The post stated that he is the father of 23 children.
In the iconic interview with Emily Shields, formerly Emily Crooks, the deejay confirmed that he had the aforementioned number of children along with the fact that he has 22 different baby mothers.
In 2022 however, one of his confidants, Stacey Bryan also known as Stacious said that the deejay had 33 children with 32 different baby mothers.
The late, great Bob Marley was another person included in the post along with the number of children which is 13. A couple of his children turned out to be musical and entertainment icons in their own right such as Damian “Junior Gong” Marley and Ky-Mani Marley and Ziggy Marley just to name a few.
One person who was at the forefront of the post was musical stalwart, the late Aston Barrett who is ironically dubbed as the “Family man” who is said to have 41 children.
This post resulted in a lot of impressions and reactions from Dancehall and Reggae fans as they took to the comment section to share their opinions.
Some persons expressed concern as they claim that the practice of having a large number of children can potentially result in some being left out and ultimately “fatherless”.
Expressing this sentiment, one person commented, “It looks like these men are playing games. I wonder if most of these children know them or they’re taking care of them.”
Another one apparently sharing similar thoughts, commented, “The real question is are they being a father to their children, do the kids know each other? It’s easy to get someone pregnant.”
Others took this post in a very lighthearted way.
One user commented, “Sharp shooters, nah miss a shot !” followed by laughing emojis.
Another user said, “Nesbeth, you need to catch up my dear”.
Generally speaking, the post garnered mixed reactions from supporters, as many have different views on persons having a large number of children. Honourable mentions included in the post were names like Beenie Man and Gregory Isaacs, both with 12 children each along with Dancehall legend, Buju Blanton who has 17 children.
