KAZAKHSTAN (CMC):
THE MVP Track Club duo of Jamaicans Kishane Thompson and Tia Clayton both won gold at the Astana Indoor Meet for Amin Tuyakov Prizes yesterday.
Thompson got his indoor season off to a winning start at the opening World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting of the year, by capturing the 60 metres final in a time of 6.56 seconds.
However, the 23-year-old Olympic 100-metre silver medallist did cause some concern when he came up limping moments after winning the race.
Thompson had already signalled his intentions with a season-opening 6.48 seconds outdoors in Jamaica last weekend, and he won comfortably ahead of Oman’s Ali Anwar Baluchi and Japan’s Shuhei Tada, who were second and third, respectively, in 6.60 and 6.62 seconds.
Clayton, Thompson’s training partner, copped gold in the women’s equivalent on her way to setting a new meet record of 7.18 seconds, ahead of Portugal’s Lorene Bazolo in 7.34 seconds.
Clayton’s twin sister, Tina, claimed bronze in 7.36 seconds, the same time as fourth-place Magdalena Stefanowicz of Poland.
