India’s National Medical Commission (NMC) has blacklisted four foreign medical colleges, and three of them are in Belize. Last week, the NMC issued an advisory, warning students against attending Central American Health and Sciences University (CAHSU); the Columbus Central University (CCU), and the Washington University of Health and Sciences. The Commission said that any student enrolled in these institutions could find themselves ineligible for medical registration in India. The blacklisting comes after repeated warnings that the institutions were not compliant with the parameters laid out in India’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiates (FMGL) Regulations, 2021. The stringent advisory follows previous warnings in August 2023 and November 2024. Despite these prior cautions, the NMC notes a continued trend of Indian students enrolling in non-compliant foreign medical institutions. Concerns highlighted by the Indian Embassy in Mexico and the Ministry of External Affairs against these institutions include a lack of compliance with Indian medical education standards, inadequate infrastructure, poor quality of education and clinical training, instances of student harassment, excessive fees, and denial of fee refunds. In a statement issued over the weekend, the commission noted that non-compliance with its advisory may result in students being unable to register for medical practice in India. It went on to urge students and parents to consult the “Alert/Advisory” on the NMC website for essential information on recognized institutions and eligibility criteria. Love News reached out to the Ministry of Education, but the minister says he will research the issue further before making a comment to the press.
