Star man Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was again the difference maker with 31 points, five rebounds and nine assists.
Julius Randle led Minnesota with 28 points and eight rebounds.
Game two in the best of seven series will be on Thursday.
Meanwhile, game one in the Eastern Conference final is on Wednesday with New York Knicks battling Indiana Pacers at Madison Square Garden.
