Tier II final not just academic – coaches

THE JAMAICA Football Championships (Tier II) season concludes this afternoon with the final at Drax Hall between newly promoted Jamaica Premier League (JPL) clubs Treasure Beach and Spanish Town Police FC, starting at 3.

Spanish Town Police eliminated league favourites Falmouth on penalties in last Saturday’s semifinal, after a 1-1 draw on aggregate.

While, Treasure Beach, who are returning to the league after a season’s absence, are aiming to end unbeaten.

The St Elizabeth club has won nine and drawn seven of their 16 matches, including the two semifinal games, and club director Carlton Taylor, said the objective is to see the team end the season without a loss.

“We know about winning. We are unbeaten in 16 games. So coaches, players, managers and executives, everybody says we are to go undefeated this season.

“We are going for 17 straight. And we are well set to win the game. There is no change of plans or changes in the team. We are going for the win. It’s a final,” he said.

Taylor is aware Spanish Town have no problem playing as the underdogs, noting that they defeated former Premier League team Lime Hall on the final day of the regular season to qualify for the semifinals, then beat title favourites Falmouth to earn their place in the final.

“We are not taking anything for granted. If you are in it, you can win it. Congrats to them. It’s their first time in the (Tier II) league and they went straight to the Premier league.

“But we created history already (qualifying for the JPL in 2023-24 season) and we are going to do it again. We are going for the 17 wins unbeaten. History. And the last time we played the final, we won it,” he pointed out.

“We are well upbeat and not because we have reached the Premier League already. We are coming for the win. And you must be confident when you play 16 games and you don’t lose one,” said Taylor, who noted that their squad include 16 schoolboys.

Spanish Town Police technical director, Howard Dyer, said they know of Treasure Beach’s impressive unbeaten run in the league. However, he believes they will be the one to stop them in their tracks.

“They have gone 17 wins and they are coming for a win Saturday. They are unbeaten. They drew games but they haven’t been beaten. So they are trying to put history on the board. But we did our history already, so we are going to spoil up their big history. It’s a big thing they are going after. But we are going to deal with it,” he said.

Dyer said despite the persistent rain this week, they have kept training and will be fully prepared for the match.

“We really train hard. Rain fell but we trained in the rain. So we are going all out. We have nothing to really draw us back. We are prepared to go all out. And no matter how, we want to win it. We are going to take it,” he added.
