Tightening the ship: Reynolds brings defensive discipline to Harbour View

2 days ago 1

Since taking over head coaching duties at Harbour View Football Club earlier this month, Vassell Reynolds has gone unbeaten in four matches in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) with three draws and a win.

In those four games, the team conceded six goals after a 5-2 win over Spanish Town Police and a 4-4 draw with Montego Bay United in his first two matches, followed by 0-0 draws against Molynes United and current league leaders Racing United.

Reynolds noted that since arriving at the east Kingston club, the majority of his time has been spent on organising the defence. And although he admits there is more work to be done on the defensive end, he pointed out that they are now working on how they can be more efficient in attack as well.

“Our transition from defence to attack, we need to do some work there. There is a lot of work to be done, especially from mid-pitch into the attack.

“We would have spent 75 per cent of the past few weeks working on our defensive structure. It is bearing some fruit and we have to continue to work on that.

“But now we need to go and have a look at the middle part of our play and up front, and see if we can make the connections.

“So we continue to work, especially on turnovers, in that crucial moment when you win possession, what you do with the ball,” he said.

Harbour View sit eighth in the JPL standings with 14 points from 12 matches, and Reynolds believes they are in a good place to mount a challenge for a top six spot.

“It (eighth) is a good base. It would have given us a boost. The intention over the first first six games was to stabilise the team, in terms of being in a decent position where the table is concerned.

“We are unbeaten in four games now and the objective is to remain unbeaten for the rest of this year. If we can do that, we should be in a decent position and then we take it from there.

“But we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. We still have to take it one game at a time. We have two tough games coming up and we just want to remain focused. We have been doing a lot of work in terms of our structure, and how we deal with the ball out of possession and we have gotten two clean sheets, which is a marked improvement,” he added.

Harbour View’s next assignment is against defending champions Cavalier and Reynolds wants to take advantage of the champions’ current vulnerability, as they have not performed as consistently as expected this season.

“We look to Cavalier at the weekend (tomorrow). Let’s see if we can take advantage of them not doing as well they would normally be doing. Hopefully, we can put in a good performance and get the desired result.

“It’s a tough challenge as Cavalier always find a way to win when necessary. So we have to improve. We are deep in planning as we try to manage this festive season and hopefully we can get some work done and prepare adequately for this one,” he said.
