AS ACTION in the ISSA Tip Friendly Society School Girls Football competition continues, the early season contenders have begun to make their presence felt.
Defending champions Excelsior have rebounded from a first-game scare to get back to their usual dominance after two games played in Zone F.
The Xavier Gilbert-coached unit started their season with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Merl Grove where Yasheka Lewis’ added-time brace guided them to all three points.
They followed up that performance with a dominant 11-0 win over Immaculate Conception to lead the zone with six points from two games played, just ahead of Tivoli Gardens, who sit second with four points from three games.
Merl Grove are third in the zone with three points but have a game in hand over Tivoli, who they defeated 7-1 in their second encounter.
Last year’s beaten finalists, Holmwood Technical, have also enjoyed an impressive start to the season.
The Manchester-based school has scored 47 goals in their opening three games and have only conceded twice, as they blanked Mount Saint Joseph 20-0 before routing Belair 14-0.
Their third game, a 13-2 win over Bishop Gibson, saw them giving up goals for the first time.
Holmwood’s next assignment will see them taking on Manchester High in an early top-of-the-table clash.
Holmwood lead Zone B with nine points while Manchester sit level but trail with a smaller goal difference.
Manchester’s last outing saw them comfortably ending Alphansus Davis’ unbeaten run, edging them 3-0 on the day.
LEADING TEAM
Over in Zone E, Edith Dalton-James have also caught the attention with their attacking displays, leading their rivals with three wins from as many games.
They opened their campaign by blanking José Martí 8-0 before an impressive follow-up performance downing Waterford 15-1.

Hot on their tails is the Spanish Town-based St Jago, who recovered from their nil-all draw with St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) to get the better of Hillel Academy 5-2.
St Jago will be looking to close the gap on the top spot in the zone as their next match will be against zone leaders Edith Dalton-James.
Seaforth have been quietly enjoying their time in Zone G, dominating Port Antonio, Titchfield, and Morant Bay 12-0, 4-0, and 7-0, respectively.
The school from St Thomas is yet to concede a goal this season, and will be hoping to extend their defensive record when they take on Yallahs in their next fixture.
It is a similar story in Zone C where B.B. Coke lead the way with a perfect record after three games.
They clipped rivals St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) 3-1 in their first game of the season before turning back Aberdeen 5-0 in their second.
They were put to the test against Lacovia, but edged past their opponents with a close 1-0 win.
The action continues tomorrow with several games across the various zones. The first round is slated to end March 21.
